For the visitor, London is a paradise. It’s packed with cultural attractions, from museums and galleries to historic buildings, shops and markets. There’s nightlife and entertainment, and opportunities to taste food from every part of the world. The capital also benefits from a multicultural mix of people.
London has something for everyone. It is a global cosmopolitan city full of different influences and tastes, so you’re sure to fit right in. It certainly deserves its reputation as one of the most exciting cities in the world.
Studying
London has a population of 7.5 million. Its size can be a shock for visitors, but it does mean there is a wonderful choice of English Language schools for anyone who wishes to improve their English.
You will find a school to suit every need and budget. If you like the energy of the city center, then have a look at our central London schools in zone 1. But, if you prefer to enjoy the pleasures of London without the stress, there are great schools in all the suburbs from zone 2 to zone 6.
City life
London is full of influences old and new. See the history of London royalty at the Tower of London, get views over the city on the London Eye, take in some modern art at Tate Modern, relax at a classical music concert, or spend an evening in a pub, bar or club. The capital offers so much to see and do in your spare time – and the good news is that many attractions are free.
For shopaholics, London offers a fantastic choice. World-famous stores, unique street markets, unusual boutiques, and interesting bargains at any of London’s 300 markets.
Exploring
If you enjoy spending time outdoors, you’ll love London’s open spaces – with more than 1,800 parks and commons. You can see wild deer in Richmond Park, play golf on Wimbledon Common, go boating in Hyde Park, or enjoy a variety of music at one of the many free weekend music festivals.
London also has a large network of waterways and canals, with walking paths taking you through leafy parks and urban spaces. What’s more, it costs nothing to walk along the river and enjoy London’s historic buildings.
Living
London can be expensive for accommodation, but there’s lots of variety – from halls of residence to youth hostels and hotels. Host families tend to be a little further away from schools than in other regions, but this is all part of living in such a large city. Transport links are excellent too.
If you are staying for a longer period of time, you may even decide to rent a flat with a group of international friends or British students once you have settled in.
Buying food and enjoying yourself in London does not cost as much as you might imagine. There are cafes, restaurants, bars and shops to suit all budgets, and many museums and art galleries cost nothing to visit.
Like in any big city, some students worry about personal safety. But, as long as you take the usual sensible precautions, there’s no need to feel anxious. Your school or language centre will be happy to give you advice, or download Education UK’s booklet on personal health and safety below.
